KS2 SATs & 11+ Preparation: Helping Your Child Build Confidence for Success
By Miss Hasina Khatun | Primary Teacher, Year 5 & 6 SATs and 11+ Tutor
Whether your child is preparing for their KS2 SATs or the 11+ entrance exam, confidence plays a huge part in their success.
Over the years, I've worked with many children who had the ability to achieve excellent results but simply didn't believe in themselves. With the right support, children don't just improve academically. They become more confident learners who are willing to tackle challenges and enjoy learning again.
Preparing for SATs or the 11+ isn't about completing endless worksheets. It's about understanding the concepts, practising regularly and building the confidence to apply those skills when it matters most.
Understanding KS2 SATs and the 11+
Although both assessments take place during primary school, they are designed for different purposes.
KS2 SATs assess your child's understanding of the Year 6 curriculum in:
Maths
Reading
Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (SPaG)
The 11+ is an entrance exam used by many grammar and independent schools. Depending on the school, it may include:
English
Maths
Verbal Reasoning
Non Verbal Reasoning
Both assessments rely on strong core skills, careful preparation and a positive mindset.
How Parents Can Help at Home
One of the questions parents ask me most is, "How much revision should my child be doing?"
My advice is always the same. Short, focused sessions are far more effective than hours of revision.
Twenty to thirty minutes each day, alongside regular reading and plenty of encouragement, is often all that's needed to build confidence and make steady progress.
Every child learns differently, so try not to compare your child with others. Progress looks different for everyone.
✏️ Teacher's Tip
When your child gets a question wrong, don't rush to give them the answer.
Instead, ask them,
"Can you talk me through how you worked it out?"
You'll often find they recognise their own mistake once they explain their thinking. It's a technique I use regularly because it helps children become more independent learners.
⭐ Common Mistake
A common misconception is that completing lots of practice papers is the best way to prepare.
Practice papers are useful, but only once your child understands the topic. If fractions, reading inference or reasoning questions are still causing difficulties, it's much more beneficial to spend time strengthening those skills first.
💡 Parent Challenge
This week, ask your child to teach you something they've learned at school.
It could be a maths method, a grammar rule or a reading strategy.
If they can explain it clearly, they've probably understood it. If they struggle, you've identified an area that needs a little more attention.
Every Child Learns in Their Own Way
No two children learn in exactly the same way.
Some children need extra support with arithmetic, while others need help developing reading comprehension or reasoning skills. That's why every lesson I teach is tailored to the individual child rather than following the same plan for everyone.
Whether your child is preparing for KS2 SATs, working towards the 11+ or simply wants to feel more confident in Primary Maths or English, lessons are designed around their individual needs and goals.
