Building Strong Maths Skills at Home: Simple Ways to Help Your Child Succeed

By Miss Hasina Khatun | Primary Teacher, Year 5 & 6 SATs and 11+ Tutor

Many parents tell me the same thing.

"I want to help my child with maths, but it's taught so differently now."

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.

The good news is that helping your child with maths doesn't mean you need to know every method or spend hours completing worksheets. Some of the best learning happens through everyday conversations and short, focused practice.

Building confidence is just as important as getting the right answer.

Why Maths Confidence Matters

I've taught children who were convinced they "weren't good at maths."

In reality, many simply lacked confidence.

Once children begin to understand that making mistakes is part of learning, something changes. They become more willing to have a go, explain their thinking and tackle more challenging questions.

Confidence is often the first step towards better results.

Five Easy Ways to Support Maths at Home

1. Practise Times Tables Regularly

A few minutes each day is far more effective than one long session at the weekend.

Strong times table knowledge helps children with fractions, percentages, division and many SATs questions.

2. Use Everyday Maths

Maths is everywhere.

Ask your child to:

  • Work out the shopping total.

  • Measure ingredients while cooking.

  • Calculate change.

  • Estimate how long a journey will take.

These small activities help children see that maths has real-life value.

3. Encourage Children to Explain Their Thinking

Instead of asking,

"What's the answer?"

Try asking,

"How did you work that out?"

Explaining their thinking helps children develop reasoning skills, which are essential in both KS2 SATs and the 11+.

4. Celebrate Mistakes

Children often learn the most from the questions they get wrong.

Rather than focusing on the mistake itself, help them understand why it happened and what they could do differently next time.

5. Keep Practice Short

Children learn more when they're engaged.

Twenty minutes of focused maths practice is usually far more productive than an hour spent feeling frustrated.

✏️ Teacher's Tip

One activity I often recommend to parents is asking children to estimate an answer before they calculate it.

If the final answer is very different from their estimate, it encourages them to check their working and spot simple mistakes.

It's a habit that builds confidence as well as accuracy.

⭐ Common Mistake

One of the biggest misconceptions is that children should memorise methods without understanding why they work.

When children understand the reasoning behind a method, they're much more likely to apply it correctly in unfamiliar questions.

Understanding always comes before speed.

💡 Parent Challenge

Choose one maths question today and ask your child to explain every step aloud.

Don't interrupt.

Just listen.

You might be surprised how much they already know, and you'll quickly identify the areas where they need a little more support.

Every Child Can Enjoy Maths

No child should feel that they're "just not a maths person."

With encouragement, personalised support and plenty of practice, every child can develop confidence and improve their mathematical understanding.

My lessons focus on building strong foundations, helping children understand concepts and making maths feel achievable.
